LeakPrevention

These are home remedies, submitted by people, not doctors.
They are from personal experience, and should not be taken as medical advice…Nothing is a one-size-fits-all, but you may get some ideas (that work) from sharing ideas.

First of all, if you are itching, it is probably due to leaks and/or an allergic reaction to products.  Some antibiotics can make us have a skin irritation.  Sometimes, for whatever reason, we become allergic to a product that we had no problems with in the past…

Here’s what I do and use:

I take one tablet of generic pepcid (famotidine)each day (to control gas)

I take 2 caplets of Anti-diarrheal (loperamide hydrochloride 2mg) 4 times per day

I take 2-3 capsules (not the hard tablet kind) of generic metamucil capsules 4 times per day

Use some adhesive remover to get all of the stickiness off your skin

Wipe your skin with some water, alcohol wipes or a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a tissue – get all chemicals off of your skin.

Put some skin barrier/skin prep on your skin to form a barrier between your tummy and the appliance, adhesives, etc

Spray a little bit of medical adhesive spray onto the wafer (Product #7730 Hollister)
https://www.hollister.com/us/products/product_series.asp?id=1&family=1&series=90

Put the flat side of a Convex Barrier ring onto the side of the wafer that you stick to your tummy (Hollister Product #79530)
https://www.hollister.com/us/products/product_series.asp?id=1&family=1&series=493

Put a 4″ barrier ring (Hollister Product #7806)(Convatec Product # 839001 Eakin Seal) onto your tummy, rolling the hole open enough to fit around your stoma

Put the wafer over the 7806 or 839001, onto your tummy.

Active Lifestyle makes a product called SureSeal rings. (http://www.alpglobal.com/Sure-Seal-TM-Rings.html) I use the medium size
They go over the wafer, before you put the bag on. It makes everything waterproof, and gives it more support from leaks

When I have sheets of tagaderm, I make homemade SureSeal Rings

Then put on your pouch/bag

A regular ostomy belt will help hold everything down, giving more support. (https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=hollister%20support%20belt)
